Stdavidsseaweedweek!

PROGRAMME

2016

Wednesday 7th – Wednesday 14th September

The third annual celebration of seaweed will take place in St Davids, Pembrokeshire from Wednesday 7th – Wednesday 14th September. This is the only celebration dedicated to Seaweed in the British Isles so save the dates in your diary!

Here is an unique opportunity to get up-close and personal with something that we all remember as smelly slippery stuff from our childhood beach holidays! Come and discover the beautiful colours and fabulous shapes of seaweeds. Play with it, photograph it, paint it, collage it, forage it, art and craft it, eat it, put it on your face and love it!  There will be individual courses at various venues in St Davids and on the seashore with experienced foragers, artists, craftsmen and chefs.

The Welsh love eating laver, but there are other fantastically tasty, edible seaweeds growing around our shores as well. Come and learn how to identify them and discover what other uses they have. Find out how to use your camera to capture creative images of rock pools and watery seaweed, or learn how to use this amazing free food in your cooking. Discover how to use it in your bath and make a face pack to take home. Produce seaweedy felt, make seaweed-pressed pottery and seaweed fronds from glass. Bake seaweed bread, sketch it, collect exciting finds from the beach and design a collage to take home and learn how to print with seaweed. Come seashore foraging and cook on a beach fire. And plenty more of course…

On Friday 9th, in the evening, there will be a Really Wild Barbeque including local seafood and other wonderful, wild foraged ingredients.

Have a look at last year’s (2015) workshops and courses…

SUNDAY 9TH

1:30pm – 5:00pm
Becoming mindful in nature – a nature-awareness experience walk with ANDREW DUGMORE. Seaweed sits at the boundaries of different life systems.  It inhabits the borders of the rock and sand of dry land and the touching of the ocean wave.  It is able to thrive and adjust to both mediums of existence.

In our exploration of seaweed and its existence at the edge of transition we will slow down, become present, use our senses to taste, smell, touch, listen and see.

Nature-awareness and reflection will become our tools of exploration as we move deeper into the appreciation of seaweed and how this experience can bring a connection to our own inner and outer worlds and our experience of boundaries, transition and living at the edge of life.

Approx 3 miles, meeting and finishing at Porthclais.

1.00pm-6.00pm (approx)
Rupert Dunn will be running a bread-making workshop. You will explore the culinary interface between land and sea through merging of flour, water, salt and seaweed! Laver-bread is a famous Welsh dish, consisting of the seaweed of the same name, and often rolled with oats and fried in bacon fat. In your workshop, you’ll be incorporating seaweed into a sourdough loaf of bread using heritage spelt flour from a local watermill.

Participants will be able to make a loaf incorporating a couple of different kinds of seaweed, then, once risen, you will be baking it in a wood-fired oven, before sharing out for people to take home this taste of the land-meeting-the-sea.

While you wait for the dough to prove, we shall all be sharing a drink and discussing how the elements shape our food and our experience of it, how, if we are mindful of our interactions of the elements while we work, we can influence our experience of the product and the quality of it.

Cost:-£22.00 per person, including ingredients.
